1. I am a bit of a control freak as well as a picture snob ( I know hard to believe) so the fact that I wasn't taking the pictures and videos myself freaked me out a little.
2. This was the team that my son was on last year and I made a DVD that everyone loved. I was afraid that this one would not measure up, and I didn't want them to think that I didn't care as much or try as hard this year.
3. One of the parents had video of every game but the DVD files were too big for my computer to handle. My computer kept crashing and my IT person (otherwise known as my husband) was in Europe for work (his real work, not the helping me work).
That third reason probably presented the biggest roadblock, mainly because the DVD last year was set up by game and very video heavy. I tried using the video footage provided but I was having a hard time -and my computer an even harder time - sifting through all the material. In short, I needed a new plan of attack. I needed to focus on what I had that was better than last year which was superior action shots and candids of the boys on the team. Once I realized that, I decided to set the project up as a video yearbook complete with superlatives.
A photo montage should be thought of as a story with clearly defined plot lines. For example, I was doing one for my mother, and my sister came up with the brilliant idea of featuring pictures to the song "Holiday" by Madonna. Now this is a song that would never, ever be associated with my mother. But it was a terrific idea for 2 reasons: most of our great family pictures happen at the two required events in my family, Christmas Eve and July 3rd and it gave the movie a bounce in its step. When making a movie, you should think about what your are trying to say and feature pictures and video that support this. This also brings us to the crucial point of quality of pictures and video. I just recently redid my wedding video and the quality of the actual video was terrible but the feeling it captured was still there. The essence of the day was evident. For this project, my friend had a ton of phenomenal pictures that captured the action, spirit and heart of her son's team. For all my trepidation, I think that is why in the end the movie worked.
