Group pictures are definitely not my strong suit. I have a tough time directing and posing, never mind making sure that everyone has their eyes open and shirts tucked in properly. In other words, group pictures are to me what the Patriots pass defense is to the team: flashes of something good mixed with long stretches of inconsistency.
Since practice is the key to improving (hopefully the Pats defense will do some of that soon), I was absolutely thrilled when my sister-in-law and I decided to take some pictures of the kids in her extended family last month. The sun was pretty tough to work with because it was so bright and we wanted the water in the shot. This meant that I had to make sure that no one ending up with a shadow across their face. I ended up having the groups face the sun and squint and bear it. The easiest thing to have done would have been to shoot with the sun behind us but like I mentioned, we really wanted the water in the background so that was not an option.
All in all, I feel like I still need a lot of practice but also that I did my best in a less than ideal situation. I am trying hard to let go of my perfectionist tendencies so for now, I'll be happy with that. And keep practicing.
