Like most everyone else out there, I have done my share of complaining about all the things that I have to do to get ready for Christmas. And about how much commercialism and political correctness there is out there now. Well last night when we went to La Salette shrine, I got a much needed slap in the face.
Every night before they turn on the lights, they have a blessing that ends with the placing of the baby into the manger. Last night, the priest told us that they had special guests to perform the duties of the blessing. He told us that the mother, father and brother that were taking care of placing the baby, giving the signal to turn on the lights and holding the book of prayers had lost their 20 year old son and brother. Standing there watching this holy ritual performed by people that have gone through the worst thing a family can experience reminded me of how very lucky I am in all the most important ways. Every time that I'm about to complain this Christmas, I will think of this family standing there with dignity and grace and Thank God for all I have instead. May God bless you all and keep you safe this holiday season.
